Boyden Cavern Please be aware that to get to Boyden Cavern, you must drive into Sequoia National Park where the National Park Service charges each vehicle $20. This fee is not associated with Boyden Cavern. You will still have to pay an admission price at the cavern. Boyden Cavern lies beneath the massive 2,000 foot high marble walls of the famous Kings Gates. It is a magnificent cavern with many varieties of natural speleothems, including rare "shield" formations. Visitors are delighted to find that spectacular beauty above ground is complimented by natural beauty underground. THE SLIDE SHOW. Black Chasm Cavern was designated a National Natural Landmark by the National Park Service in 1976 after being recommended by local members of the National Speleological Society, and as such is considered a "nationally significant natural area.” They feature gemstone mining and gold panning. Black Chasm Cavern was named a National Natural Landmark in 1976 by the National Park Service. It opened as California's newest show cave in 2001 for guided walking tours which culminate in a visit to the Landmark Room where the cave's trademark helictites are located. Twisting, turning and looping out of the walls, these usually rare formations have developed in spectacular profusion. The Colossal Room is traversed across a bridge suspended 70 feet above lake made brilliant blue by naturally occurring calcium bicarbonate. Photo Gallery. We also know that California Cavern was the very first cave in the state to be opened to the public for guided tours in 1850. In the early days, the cave was known as "Mammoth Cave." The original tours, though impressive, were shorter than they are today, since more of the cave system has been discovered over the years.
