Question:

Hello just happened to find your web site thought I'd pick your brain about the jars with glass lids that use rubber gaskets. Are they safe to use in a presser canner and do they work as well as the metal lid type? Just getting into canning and my parents have about 80 gasket types I could have but don't want to waste time money and food not to mention my families well being to get out of it cheap. she never had any problems with them but she used hot water bath canner with them. Thanks for your time hope you can answer nobody i know seems to know.

The type of jar I'm referring to has the metal wire that snaps down over the top of the lid I think there made by Ball.

I have never used that type of jar but I found this reference talking about them: http://www.backwoodshome.com/advice/ajo060527.html Jackie recommends them ONLY for water bath canning. While she is there, she would enjoy the Ask Jackie columns. They deal with a lot of different types of canning as this woman puts up virtually all of her food. They don't use a freezer for long term storage and they live up in the woods and so going to the store daily is not something she does. The author identifies herself as a survivalist and her columns are great. While she is there, Backwoods Home has articles from other people on the canning/preserving subjects. She can go through the previous issue archives. Lots of good information Kathy, The Scrubbie Lady

Ok, with the metal type tops it is easy to tell if the seal has been broken by the middle of it popping up. When you use the gasket types ones- and this only applies to the ones with the clamp down lid, there is no way to tell if your seal has been broken so you have to be a bit more careful with making sure you smell the contents and boil it for at least 10 minutes. However they should work just fine, if you want to use them provided the gaskets are still in good shape. It is hard to find replacement gaskets though I have seen some on Ebay.

Now Lehman's sells a European jar that has a gasket but does not have a clamp down lid. With these it is easier to tell if the seal has been broken by just pulling up gently on the lid from time to time, if the top comes off you know the jar isn't good. These are good jars, though expensive but you don't have to buy metal lids all the time.

Hope that helps!
